A Year in the Life of an Art Journal

For my post over at the A Year in the Life of an Art Journal I wanted to share a technique that I fell in love with - using Gesso with stencils!! In this tutorial I am using the Crafter's Workshop woodgrain template (which I adore) and Gesso, but you can use whatever template/stencil you have!

Lay your template onto your paper and then paint the Gesso on top of it using a brush. Don't be fussy because it's nice when you get thicker and thinner spots, it just adds to the look and texture.

Once you have finished brushing on the Gesso gently peel the stencil from your page and wash it off (I just wash mine in the sink using warm water) and let your page dry.

Now it's time to paint!! I diluted my brown paint with some water so it will let the Gesso'd design show through

When you are done painting and your paint has dried now you can make whatever you want! This is my finished art journal page

I can't wait to see what you do!! And before I forget here is my April 365 from my iphone, all filled in!

Crafter's Workshop 12 x 12 Sunburst Stencil

I had some fun this weekend and made 3 journal pages using the Crafter's Workshop 12 x 12 Sunburst stencil.

I find that when I use a stencil with glimmermist that I have no much ink left over and I hate to see it wash down the drain. What I did was use the Sunburst stencil on my first page and sprayed it with Saphire glimmermist and made this art journal page:

Then since the stencil was so saturated with ink I gently placed a 12 x 12 cream colored piece of cardstock on top of it and smoothed it out so it would absorb the ink. When my paper dried I cut out the circle shape and made this journal page:

That's still alot of ink right? It left me with the negative image which I think is so cool. Since my stencil STILL had some ink on it I took another piece of 12 x 12 paper, this time in a lilac color, and placed it on top of then stencil again and smoothed it out with my hands leaving me with a very subtle image of the blue starburst which turned into this art journal page:

So there you have it. Never waste mists or inks again! I got 3 pages out of the one sprayed stencil and love how each turned out. It was fun to have time to play since I haven't had much lately. Happy Sunday!!

New Wheels!!!!!!!!!

I got new wheels!!!! My car died and I had been driving John's old blue jalopy for a week and we finally bit the bullet and splurged and got me a 2011 Ford Escape XLT, fully loaded!!!!! I am still pinching myself. It has "sync" so I can just plug my iphone in and make and receive phone calls, listen to music, etc.. It's amazing. Plus it drives like a dream. I'm thinking of calling it "the Bat Mobile" because when I'm inside it it's like a command central. hehe. Here she is in all her glory (ignore the mud splashes, the weather here hasn't gotten nice enough for me to wash her yet!)

The new prompt is up over at A Year in the Life of an Art Journal and here it is:

ie: The little things take some photos of some of the little details in your day that make you smile.
THE STUFF: Macro Photos/Inchies
ie: Take some photos and use small prints of them on your page. (or clip some from a magazine)
THE TEChNIQUE: Grid Scrapping
ie: Use the images in 1in. squares and create a grid of the little things.

and here was my take on it

When I was little my mom wrote me a note and on it was this quote "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things" and it has stuck with me ever since. I did my page on just things that make me happy, nothing big but again it's all about the little things! I didn't use inchies as my pictures were too big but I do love to grid scrap!

I got my bowl back from the glass fusing class I took and it turned out awesome!! I am really happy with it. Here it is

I wish the picture did it more justice but it's kind of hard to take a good one as the glass reflects so much light. Paige and I will be doing a class together in May to make a bowl, some good mother/daughter bonding time! Can't wait!

The house is coming along, John is doing trim work now

what a mess eh?

I got the exciting news today that the new Featuring Magazine is out and my copy is on it's way to me!! I have some artwork in here and am super pumped to see the article and artwork as well as everyone elses!!! Make sure you go to the website and see what it's all about as it looks amazing!!!

I finished the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series, I'm sure you have heard about it (what woman hasn't by now right???) and loved the first 2 books but wasn't dazzled by the 3rd.

Have you read them? Want to read them? Thoughts?

Happy Easter everyone!!

I cooked a 17 pound bird today, I must be out of my mind!! Of course it's always good once it's all done and you know you don't have to cook for a few days! Everyone has left me and has gone to lay down, I'm taking that as a sign of a good cook?? haha Since I'm left to my own devices I'll share a layout I made today :

Concert news: John and I will be going to see Loverboy in June!! woohoo!! Talk about reliving our youth! haha We used to love them and I can't wait to see them in concert!! You probably remember this album, 1981 baby!!

I used to loooovveeee this song!!!! As soon as the guitar starts it gives me shivers!!

Of course they are older now but hey, so am I right? Cannot wait.

Last Thursday night I took a glass fusing class and made a bowl. It was my first time doing this and it was soooo fun!!! Here is me and my bestie

and here is what my bowl looked like before it went into the kiln

I can't wait for the teacher to finish firing and "slumping" it so I can see the finished product!! I'll update my blog when I get it back.

Had a wonderful time with my sweet peas on the weekend, they are just soooooooooooo cute!!! Keegan is talking more and more and loved sharing Auntie Paige's ice cream slurpee

and Caitlyn is just a little doll. How cute is she in this dress?? It looks like she should be churning butter somewhere at a Hutterite Colony, I just love it!!

and I love this picture of Paige

And here is my March Photo 365

I just love how it looks when it gets all filled up!

Tomorrow I'm not planning on leaving the house, I have one last day before I go back to work and I'm going to play in my art room!! Now I'm off to see if anyone has come out of their turkey coma! haha
